KEY GAME INFORMATION
FLORIDA ST: Last season: 23-12, reached third Elite Eight in school history.
Nickname: Seminoles.
Coach: Leonard Hamilton.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: Guard Braian Angola (graduated, will play for Orlando Magic's G League team in Lakeland), guard C.J. Walker (transfer to Ohio State), center Ike Obiagu (transfer to Seton Hall), forward Brandon Allen (graduated).
Who's back: The Seminoles return seven of their top nine scorers and their top five rebounders. But the team's leading scorer, senior F Phil Cofer, is out for at least six weeks after suffering a foot injury in practice. Cofer led FSU in scoring (12.8 points) and was second in rebounding (5.1) in 2017-18. Senior G Terance Mann is a versatile scorer who is coming off his best season (12.6 points and team-leading 5.4 rebounds). Trent Forrest steps into the starting point guard role, and the junior drives the lane through traffic with confidence. The rising star is sophomore F Mfiondu Kabengele, who averaged 7.2 points and 4.6 rebounds last season. Senior G P.J. Savoy is a sparkplug off the bench who knocked down 50 three-pointers last season.
Who's new: Florida State landed graduate transfer David Nichols, who averaged 14.6 points last season, from Albany. Freshman guard Devin Vassell averaged 16.7 points per game as a senior at Suwanee (Ga.) Peachtree Ridge.
The Skinny: Florida State has the length, depth and athleticism to compete with any of the ACC teams. Cofer's injury is a significant setback but he could return ahead of the start of ACC play in January.
Expectations: The Seminoles face a challenging schedule against seven teams ranked in the AP's preseason top 25, not to mention rivalry games against Florida and Miami, but should be able to win 20 games for a fourth straight season. A third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament is also likely.
N CAROLINA: Last season: 26-11, reached second round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Tar Heels.
Coach: Roy Williams.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: The program has lost mainstays from its 2017 national championship winner in point guard Joel Berry II ' a former Final Four most outstanding player ' and swingman Theo Pinson.
Who's back: Forward Luke Maye followed his last-second shot to beat Kentucky in the 2017 NCAA Elite Eight with a star-turning junior season, averaging 16.9 points and 10.1 points to be an Associated Press third-team All-American. He's now a preseason AP All-American and picked as ACC player of the year. Starters Cameron Johnson (12.4 points) and Kenny Williams (11.4) are back on the perimeter, which also has junior point guard Seventh Woods competing to take Berry's job. There's also a rotation of serviceable big men, led by sophomores Garrison Brooks and Sterling Manley.
Who's new: The Tar Heels have their best recruiting class in years, perhaps not coincidentally as they emerge from years of uncertainty due to a now-resolved NCAA academic case. Wing Nassir Little is the kind of five-star McDonald's All-American and possible one-and-done talent that shunned the Tar Heels in recent years. There's another McDonald's All-American in Coby White, an top-25 national recruit who will compete to be the new point guard after setting a North Carolina state scoring record with more than 3,500 points in high school. And the 6-foot-7 Rechon "Leaky" Black brings size and versatility to the perimeter.
The Skinny: There's no questioning talent and scoring potential on a team with Maye, Johnson and Williams joined by the touted rookie class. There are two main questions here: the Tar Heels need White or Woods to play well at the point with Berry gone, and that revolving door of big men needs to provide some interior toughness that was lacking at times as UNC leaned heavily on a small-ball lineup last year. If the eighth-ranked Tar Heels resolve both issues, this is a Final Four contender.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have UNC at 10-to-1 to win it all, tied with Villanova for the fifth-best odds nationally.
PREVIEW
No. 8 UNC faces another test vs. No. 16 Florida State

No. 8 North Carolina, after an impressive win over No. 1 Duke, is tied for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

To guarantee staying amid the teams at the top, the Tar Heels must take care of business Saturday against No. 16 Florida State in Chapel Hill, N.C. It will be the teams' lone regular-season meeting.

The Seminoles are the hottest team in the league with eight straight wins, marking the most consecutive victories in league games in the program's ACC history.

North Carolina is reveling after an 88-72 victory over the Blue Devils on Wednesday in Durham, N.C.

Now it's up to the Tar Heels to refocus from the euphoria of winning on the road against their top rival.

"There's no better feeling," North Carolina senior guard Kenny Williams said. "It's just a whole bunch of joy around."

Entering the weekend, North Carolina shares first place with Duke (23-3, 11-2) and No. 3 Virginia (23-2, 11-2).

Meanwhile, under the radar, Florida State has put together the best stretch in the country as it has risen again in the polls.

"We're the type of team that will have different guys step up every night," Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said.

Florida State (21-5, 9-4) is receiving a team-best 13.4 points per game from 6-foot-10 redshirt sophomore forward Mfiondu Kabengele.

Because of Kabengele, some of the minutes for 7-4 Christ Koumadje have wavered. Hamilton said said it would be ideal for those post players to get as many touches as possible.

Koumadje, a senior, recorded his first two career double-doubles this month.

On the defensive end, the two bigs make a huge impact. They could present a challenge in the lane for the Tar Heels, who were produced a season-high 62 points in the paint during the Duke game.

North Carolina's interior scoring came despite 2-for-20 shooting on 3-point attempts.

"We wanted to be able to score in the paint, there's no question," Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said. "At the same time, you don't expect to go 2-for-20 (from long range)."

North Carolina has made a habit of residing near the top of ACC rebounding charts, and again the Tar Heels are tops in that category. However, Florida State has outrebounded six of its past seven opponents, producing double-digit positive margins in each of the past three games.

That's all part of what has helped create an identity for the Seminoles.

"You like to see your team developing that type of chemistry this time of year," Hamilton said.

Depth has worked to North Carolina's advantage at times, too. In the Duke game, there was postgame praise coming from the roles played by backcourt reserves Seventh Woods and Brandon Robinson.

"Coby (White) was struggling, and I think other than the (three) turnovers, Seventh was really, really good," Coach Williams said.

The Seminoles, who have won their past four road games, have already matched last season's regular-season ACC victory total.

North Carolina has had great road success as well, winning its first seven ACC games away from home. So the two conference losses for the Tar Heels have come at home, against Louisville on Jan. 12 and in the most recent home game, Feb. 11 against Virginia.

Florida State defeated visiting North Carolina 81-80 in last season's lone meeting.
