KEY GAME INFORMATION
VIRGINIA: Last season: 31-3, lost in first round of NCAA Tournament
Nickname: Cavaliers
Coach: Tony Bennett, 10th season
Conference: Atlantic Coast
Who's gone: G Devon Hall and F Isaiah Wilkins
Who's back: G Kyle Guy (14.1 ppg, 83 3-pointers) was the team's leading scorer and joins point guard Ty Jerome (10.6 ppg, 132 assists) as one of the nation's top backcourt tandems. F De'Andre Hunter returns from a late-season wrist injury as the ACC's top sixth man last year (9.2 ppg in just 19.9 mpg) and F Jack Salt anchors a defense that is always one of the nation's best. Fs Mamadi Diakite and Jay Huff have shown flashes of brilliance, but will need to offer more consistency at both ends.
Who's new: Alabama transfer Braxton Key could be a huge addition if he returns to his freshman year form when he averaged 12 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists for the Crimson Tide. Slowed by a knee injury, his numbers were cut almost in half, but at 6-foot-8, he should be a valued rebounding addition, too.
The Skinny: The Cavaliers may have topped their Ralph Sampson lost to Chaminade legacy last season by becoming the first No. 1 seed, and the overall No. 1 seed at that, to lose in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Bennett has said it's important to remember the feeling, but also their historic success and move forward. Bennett's team have largely underachieved in the tournament, reaching just one Elite Eight and one Sweet 16, a lack of success that has to haunt on some level.
Expectations: The Cavaliers are ranked fifth to start the season and picked second behind Duke in the ACC. With much veteran experience, they should again be able to give the young but talented Blue Devils a run for the ACC regular season and tournament titles.
N CAROLINA: Last season: 26-11, reached second round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Tar Heels.
Coach: Roy Williams.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: The program has lost mainstays from its 2017 national championship winner in point guard Joel Berry II ' a former Final Four most outstanding player ' and swingman Theo Pinson.
Who's back: Forward Luke Maye followed his last-second shot to beat Kentucky in the 2017 NCAA Elite Eight with a star-turning junior season, averaging 16.9 points and 10.1 points to be an Associated Press third-team All-American. He's now a preseason AP All-American and picked as ACC player of the year. Starters Cameron Johnson (12.4 points) and Kenny Williams (11.4) are back on the perimeter, which also has junior point guard Seventh Woods competing to take Berry's job. There's also a rotation of serviceable big men, led by sophomores Garrison Brooks and Sterling Manley.
Who's new: The Tar Heels have their best recruiting class in years, perhaps not coincidentally as they emerge from years of uncertainty due to a now-resolved NCAA academic case. Wing Nassir Little is the kind of five-star McDonald's All-American and possible one-and-done talent that shunned the Tar Heels in recent years. There's another McDonald's All-American in Coby White, an top-25 national recruit who will compete to be the new point guard after setting a North Carolina state scoring record with more than 3,500 points in high school. And the 6-foot-7 Rechon "Leaky" Black brings size and versatility to the perimeter.
The Skinny: There's no questioning talent and scoring potential on a team with Maye, Johnson and Williams joined by the touted rookie class. There are two main questions here: the Tar Heels need White or Woods to play well at the point with Berry gone, and that revolving door of big men needs to provide some interior toughness that was lacking at times as UNC leaned heavily on a small-ball lineup last year. If the eighth-ranked Tar Heels resolve both issues, this is a Final Four contender.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have UNC at 10-to-1 to win it all, tied with Villanova for the fifth-best odds nationally.
PREVIEW
No. 3 Virginia must bounce back at No. 8 North Carolina

Virginia follows its showdown with second-ranked Duke with another monumental clash, this time on the road Monday against No. 8 North Carolina.

No. 3 Virginia (20-2, 8-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) has slipped to third place in the ACC behind co-leaders Duke and North Carolina (19-4, 9-1).

This will be the only Virginia-North Carolina meeting of the regular season.

North Carolina holds a seven-game winning streak after Saturday's 88-85 overtime survival against visiting Miami, but Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said he understands the challenge for his team.

"They were great last year, they've been great this year," Williams said of the Cavaliers. "They've got three guys on the perimeter that are as good as any three guys on the perimeter in the country. They know their strengths. They play to their strengths."

For Virginia, it's a matter of turning the corner and recovering from the 81-71 home loss to Duke.

"Every game in the ACC is important," Virginia reserve center Jay Huff said. "Every game in the college basketball season is important. It will make it big so that we don't lose two in a row."

Virginia gave up an unusually high number of points to Duke, which made 13 shots from 3-point range. The season-high 81 points allowed seemed to shake the Cavaliers at times, something that coach Tony Bennett said probably took a mental toll as well.

But the Cavaliers realize they can't deviate from the script that has been so largely successful.

"The formula doesn't change," Bennett said. "(We'll make) little adjustments here and there. We don't have much time. We're going to play Carolina. Hopefully be more ready. That will be a great challenge, too."

North Carolina is aware that Virginia prefers a more deliberate pace, so cranking up the tempo will be one of the areas of emphasis for the Tar Heels.

"They really play their style of basketball," North Carolina guard Cameron Johnson said. "It kind of changes the whole dynamic of the game and it makes every possession matter just a little bit more."

North Carolina received 33 points Saturday against Miami from point guard Coby White, who will present a challenge for the Cavaliers. Plus, North Carolina forward Luke Maye averaged 25.5 points in two outings last week.

North Carolina is 9-1 in ACC play for the first time in Williams' 16 seasons as coach.

Even with the extra five minutes of overtime against Miami, North Carolina's 10 turnovers were its fewest in a conference game this season.

Virginia had guard Ty Jerome back for the Duke game after he hadn't played in more than a week because of a back strain. He seemed to go through the game without a hitch, though the quick turnaround could be a factor in his readiness for Monday night.

"Glad that he has been able to be healthy," Bennett said. "Hopefully, he'll be all right."

Virginia also has concerns because of forward Mamadi Diakite's head injury suffered in the first half Saturday night when he collided with teammate De'Andre Hunter. Diakite didn't play in the second half.
