KEY GAME INFORMATION
OHIO ST: Last season: 25-9, 15-3 Big Ten
Nickname: Buckeyes
Conference: Big Ten
Who's gone: F Keita Bates-Diop, F Jae'Sean Tate, G Kam Williams, G Andrew Dakich.
Who's back: F Kaleb Wesson. The 6-foot-9, 270-pound sophomore averaged 10.2 points and will be counted on to do more this season. ... F Andre Wesson. Kaleb's older brother is a small forward who will have to provide some leadership to the young team. ... C Micah Potter. Hampered by injuries, the huge junior hasn't been able to realize his potential. ... G C.J. Jackson. Senior will be counted on as one of the primary ball-handlers. ... G Musa Jallow and F Kyle Young. Expected to play bigger roles after seeing limited playing time as freshmen last year.
Who's new: G Luther Muhammad. Highly touted freshman shooting guard could work his way into a starting role. ... G Duane Washington Jr. Elite shooter from California is expected to find a role as a freshman. ... F Justin Ahrens. Well-rounded freshman de-committed after former coach Thad Matta was fired, but Holtmann got him back on board. ... F Jaedon LeDee. The 6-foot-9 freshman has the size and versatility to play at any of the frontcourt spots. ... G Keyshawn Woods. Graduate transfer from Wake Forest adds depth.
The Skinny: Holtmann cleaned up a program that had fallen into disarray, leading the Buckeyes to a 25-9 finish and earning himself Big Ten coach of the year honors. Now he has to maintain the standard after losing his two star players and welcoming a lot of new ones. The Wesson brothers, Jackson and Potter will have to play to expectations, with some immediate help from freshmen for depth. Jallow and Young have the potential to be key contributors.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Ohio State as a long shot to win the NCAA Tournament at 85-1, on par with North Carolina State and Cincinnati, while well behind Michigan, the highest ranked Big Ten team at 35-1.
MARYLAND: Last season: 19-13, missed NCAA Tournament first time in four years.
Nickname: Terrapins.
Coach: Mark Turgeon.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Forward Kevin Huerter (NBA), forward Justin Jackson (NBA), center Michal Cekovsky.
Who's back: Sophomore Bruno Fernando, a 6-foot-10 center, averaged 10.3 and 6.5 rebounds to land on the Big Ten All-Freshman team. Junior guard Anthony Cowan Jr., a two-year starter, will run the offense and was the team's leading scorer last season with 15.8 ppg. Guard Darryl Morsell started 21 games last year, averaging 8.7 points and a team-high 1.8 offensive rebounds. Forward Ivan Bender played in 15 games before a season-ending knee injury on Dec. 29.
Who's new: Freshman center Jalen Smith should be an immediate contributor. Averaged 17.9 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for Mt. Saint Joseph High in Baltimore. ... Guard Serrel Smith Jr. averaged 29.3 points and five rebounds as a senior at St. Petersburg High in Florida. ... Freshmen Trace Ramsey (6-7) and Ricky Lindo Jr. (6-8) provide height off the bench.
The Skinny: Fielding the youngest squad since he arrived at Maryland in 2011, Turgeon expects a return trip to the NCAA Tournament despite having only one scholarship senior (Bender). Jalen Smith and Fernando gives the Terrapins a formidable front court, and Cowan will have plenty of passing options when he's not taking the shot himself from the outside.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Maryland a 120-1 longshot to win the NCAA Tournament, same as Wisconsin from the Big Ten but far behind conference co-favorites Michigan and Michigan State at 35-1.
PREVIEW
No. 24 Maryland happy to home vs. Ohio State

No. 24 Maryland returns home Saturday to face Ohio State. It's about time.

It is only the second home game this month for the Terrapins, who are coming off a 66-65 victory at No. 21 Iowa.

"It was kind of a gauntlet for us that we just went through -- four out of five on the road," coach Mark Turgeon said after the defeat of the Hawkeyes.

Maryland (20-7, 11-5 Big Ten) has played six of its past nine games outside of College Park, a stretch that began on Jan. 18 -- the first time the Terps faced the Buckeyes.

That night, junior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. had 20 points and six assists in a 75-61 victory. He's coming off arguably his best game since then, delivering 17 points, eight assists and just one turnover as Maryland earned its first road victory over a ranked team since January 2008.

"Eight assists, one turnover, that's terrific," Turgeon said. "I think Anthony's a heck of a player, and he gets scrutinized so much because he's our only upperclassmen who's really playing."

While Maryland is well on track to secure an NCAA Tournament berth, Ohio State has some work to do, even after dispatching Northwestern 63-49 on Wednesday. The Buckeyes (17-9, 7-8) are 5-8 since Dec. 29 and had lost consecutive games before handling the first of their two games against Northwestern.

Kaleb Wesson is coming off a 22-point, eight-rebound showing. He also had four assists, one shy of his season high.

"I thought Kaleb was really good the whole night on both ends," Buckeyes coach Chris Holtmann said afterward.

"I thought Kaleb was assertive. We've worked with him from the beginning of the year about passing out of double teams. When you have another 6-9, 6-10 long guy coming at you, it can be really difficult. His decision-making needs to be a little quicker. It was tonight."

It needs to be again against Maryland, a formidable defensive team. The Terps also shot a robust 11 of 17 (64.7 percent) from 3-point range in the teams' first encounter, not an easy feat against Ohio State's stingy defense.

The Buckeyes have allowed only two other foes to shoot better than 40 percent from beyond the arc this year: Syracuse and Purdue.

"We're probably where we are right now because of our team defense," Holtmann said.

"That's kept us in games and given us a chance this season. You look at our defensive numbers from beginning to end, and we've certainly had some moments we've not been great. A team like Maryland who's got scoring all over the place is a real problem in terms of figuring out how to guard. But our defense has been pretty consistent."

Maryland, which plays three out of its final four regular-season games at home, will attempt to remain perfect in Big Ten home games after improving to 5-5 in road and neutral-site conference games Tuesday.

"I love our schedule," Turgeon said. "It's made us tougher. It's made us better."
