KEY GAME INFORMATION
SYRACUSE: Last season: 19-15, lost in second round of NIT
Who's gone: G Andrew White (18.5 points per game), F Tyler Lydon (13.2 points, 8.6 rebounds per game), G John Gillon (10.5 points, 5.4 assists per game), F Taurean Thompson (9.2 points), F Tyler Roberson (4.9 rebounds), F Dajuan Coleman (4.8 rebounds).
Who's back: G Tyus Battle is the lone returning starter and was third on the team in scoring as a freshman (11.3 points per game) and second in 3-pointers with 60. Junior G Frank Howard averaged 4.5 points and 3.6 assists with 38 steals as a sophomore and played in all but one game last season. F Matthew Moyer redshirted, and C Paschal Chukwu suffered an eye injury in December and did not play again.
Who's new: G Howard Washington, F Oshae Brissett, F Bourama Sidibe, F Marek Dolezaj, G Geno Thorpe, and G Elijah Hughes, who has to sit one year after transferring from from East Carolina.
The Skinny: Syracuse's 15 losses last season were the most in Boeheim's career, and with the departure of assistant coach Mike Hopkins and such a big turnover on the roster the Orange are an afterthought at best, picked in the preseason to finish 10th in the ACC. Syracuse was the top seed in the NIT last spring, which likely meant it was close to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. This team is younger but has more size, and with a veteran like Thorpe, a fifth-year senior who led South Florida in scoring (15.1 points) and assists (4.6), and the added experience of Battle and Frank Howard to help fill the void left by last year's fifth-year seniors (White and Gillon), an NCAA Tournament bid is not out of the question.
FLORIDA ST: Last season: 26-9, lost to Xavier in NCAA Tournament second round.
Who's gone: G Dwayne Bacon, F Jonathan Isaac, G Xavier Rathan-Mayes, C Michael Ojo, F Jarquez Smith.
Who's back: G Terance Mann is the Seminoles' leading returning scorer (8.4) and rebounder (4.5) along with being one of the team's more accurate shooters (57.9 percent from the field the past two seasons). G PJ Savoy is likely to move into the starting lineup and is the team's best 3-point shooter, making 40 of 100 last season. C Christ Koumadje is the tallest player in school history at 7-foot-4. He is imposing in the paint as a shot blocker but he is also one of the quickest players on the team and can easily get down the floor.
Who's new: G M.J. Walker. He was considered the top shooting guard in the nation by several recruiting services and is the second McDonald's All-American in the past three seasons to attend the school. C Ikey Obiagu is raw on the offensive end, but he could end up leading the team in blocked shots.
The Skinny: Despite returning just one starter, the Seminoles were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason poll. A lot of that is due to Hamilton often using 12 players in games last season and having an up-tempo style that averaged 82.1 points. With Mann and Savoy at the guards, it should be a better team from the perimeter but it is not as athletically gifted as last year. If ever there was a team that needed to win by a committee approach, it might be this one. If Hamilton can fuse the newcomers with what he has returning, they have a chance at making return NCAA Tournament trips for the first time since 2012.
PREVIEW
No. 23 Florida State seeing red as Orange visit

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Come Monday, No. 23 Florida State -- losers of two straight -- likely will find themselves on the outside looking in of The Associated Press Top 25 poll.

But the Seminoles will get one final shot to impress voters before they fill out their ballots this weekend.

Florida State (12-4 overall, 1-3 ACC) hosts Syracuse (12-5, 1-3) on Saturday in a duel of ACC cellar dwellers. Florida State and Syracuse are tied for second-to-last in the standings after great starts to their nonconference schedules that has not translated into conference success.

Syracuse raced out to an 11-2 start before dropping three of its first four games in ACC play, while Florida State was 11-1 before opening its ACC slate with the same results.

The Seminoles' latest disappointment came Wednesday night when they saw their remarkable 28-game home win streak snapped -- the third-longest in the nation at the time -- by Louisville. The Cardinals rallied from 13 points down at halftime to stun Florida State 73-69 at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

Before that loss, the Seminoles hadn't dropped a game on their home floor since losing to Georgia Tech 86-80 on Feb. 17, 2016.

Now, both teams face a must-win Saturday to avoid falling further behind the rest of the ACC.

"Every game in the ACC is big, but this one (Saturday against Syracuse), we've got to get it," Florida State guard and leading scorer Terance Mann (15.1 points per game) told Seminoles.com following Wednesday's loss.

Mann certainly did his part Wednesday, scoring a game-high 25 points to match his career high. But it wasn't enough as the Seminoles went ice-cold in the second half against the Cardinals. They were 0-for-8 from 3-point range after halftime before guard Braian Angola drilled two 3-pointers in the final minute to keep the Seminoles' hopes alive.

"It was an unfortunate loss," Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton told the Tallahassee Democrat. "It's painful. They were very, very disappointed, but that's part of the growth process. You have to figure out how you bounce back when you have a defeat. Everyone is going to lose some games in our league. It's just the nature of (a tough conference like) the ACC."

To do that, the Seminoles will have to find a way to overcome an angry Orange team that was a possession or two away Tuesday from upsetting No. 3 Virginia, which nipped Syracuse 68-61 in its last outing.

"We had some opportunities, but just couldn't get the ball in the basket," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told reporters following Tuesday's loss -- the Orange's third straight.

Syracuse, which is led by guard Tyus Battle's 19.1 points per game, will be facing its second straight Top 25 opponent in Florida State on Saturday. The Orange are 0-2 against Top 25 teams this year, losing to No. 12 Kansas and No. 3 Virginia.

Syracuse's last trip to Tallahassee was in 2016, and the Seminoles earned a 78-73 victory.

And Florida State hopes it can make it two in a row and help its coach secure a piece of ACC history in the process. With the Seminoles' victory over No. 20 North Carolina on Jan. 3 in Tallahassee, Hamilton moved into a tie for eighth place in the ACC's all-time career wins list for ACC games (regular season and ACC Tournament).

He joined Duke legend Vic Bubas with 128 career ACC wins.
