| WASHINGTON: Last season: 19-15, lost in second round of the NIT.
Nickname: Huskies.
Coach: Lorenzo Romar.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: G Andrew Andrews, G Dejounte Murray, F Marquese Chriss, F Donaven Dorsey.
Who's back: F Matisse Thybulle. Thybulle started all 34 games as a freshman, averaging 6.2 points and 3.2 rebounds. Expected to take on more of a scoring role this season. F Noah Dickerson. Dickerson played in 33 games as a freshman, averaging 7.5 points and 5.2 rebounds. C Malik Dime. Dime set a Washington record with 88 blocks last season and became a better offensive player as the season progressed. F Dominic Green. Green has received offseason buzz as the Huskies' most improved player.
Who's new: G Markelle Fultz. Perhaps the most decorated incoming freshman to ever arrive at Washington, Fultz is being counted on to be the Huskies' offensive leader from the start. F Sam Timmins. The 6-foot-10 freshman gives Washington additional size on the inside. F Matthew Atewe. The Auburn transfer should see significant minutes off the bench.
The Skinny: The Huskies have not made the NCAA Tournament since 2011. It's a cloud hanging over Romar and only an NCAA trip will quiet the growing dissatisfaction of fans wanting a change. Fultz is an incredible talent and may be able to get the Huskies to the NCAAs in likely his only season at Washington. | | CALIFORNIA: Last season: 23-11, lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Hawaii.
Nickname: Golden Bears.
Coach: Cuonzo Martin. He received a contract extension Tuesday through 2020-21.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: F Jaylen Brown left after his freshman season for the NBA; G Jordan Mathews transferred to Gonzaga.
Who's back: F Ivan Rabb (12.5 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 42 blocks) opted against leaving early following his freshman year for the NBA; G Jabari Bird (10.4 ppg, 3.3 rpg); G Sam Singer; 7-footers Kingsley Okoroh and Kameron Rooks.
Who's new: G Charlie Moore, a top freshman from Chicago; G Grant Mullins is a graduate transfer from Columbia.
The Skinny: Rabb's return is a big deal for the Golden Bears, who have been fueled by their frustrating first-round NCAA loss to Hawaii after getting back to the tournament for the first time since 2013. Rabb averaged 12.5 points and 8.6 rebounds during his freshman season and will be joined by G Jabari Bird as another key returning starter on a new-look team in Coach Cuonzo Martin's third season. ... Cal went a school-record unbeaten at home (18-0) in Haas Pavilion and is riding a 19-game home winning streak. A Dec. 21 date with powerhouse Virginia looms large. The Bears also face San Diego State on Nov. 21 at new Golden 1 Center in Sacramento that will host the NCAA Tournament in March. |
