KEY GAME INFORMATION
FLORIDA ST: Last season: 23-12, reached third Elite Eight in school history.
Nickname: Seminoles.
Coach: Leonard Hamilton.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: Guard Braian Angola (graduated, will play for Orlando Magic's G League team in Lakeland), guard C.J. Walker (transfer to Ohio State), center Ike Obiagu (transfer to Seton Hall), forward Brandon Allen (graduated).
Who's back: The Seminoles return seven of their top nine scorers and their top five rebounders. But the team's leading scorer, senior F Phil Cofer, is out for at least six weeks after suffering a foot injury in practice. Cofer led FSU in scoring (12.8 points) and was second in rebounding (5.1) in 2017-18. Senior G Terance Mann is a versatile scorer who is coming off his best season (12.6 points and team-leading 5.4 rebounds). Trent Forrest steps into the starting point guard role, and the junior drives the lane through traffic with confidence. The rising star is sophomore F Mfiondu Kabengele, who averaged 7.2 points and 4.6 rebounds last season. Senior G P.J. Savoy is a sparkplug off the bench who knocked down 50 three-pointers last season.
Who's new: Florida State landed graduate transfer David Nichols, who averaged 14.6 points last season, from Albany. Freshman guard Devin Vassell averaged 16.7 points per game as a senior at Suwanee (Ga.) Peachtree Ridge.
The Skinny: Florida State has the length, depth and athleticism to compete with any of the ACC teams. Cofer's injury is a significant setback but he could return ahead of the start of ACC play in January.
Expectations: The Seminoles face a challenging schedule against seven teams ranked in the AP's preseason top 25, not to mention rivalry games against Florida and Miami, but should be able to win 20 games for a fourth straight season. A third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament is also likely.
BOSTON COLLEGE: Last season: 19-16, lost in first round of NIT.
Nickname: Eagles.
Coach: Jim Christian.
Conference: ACC.
Who's gone: Forward Jerome Robinson.
Who's back: Guard Ky Bowman, the only player in the country to average at least 17.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game, is one four starters returning. Guard Jordan Chatman and forwards Nik Popvic and Steffon Mitchell are also back.
Who's new: Freshman Jairus Hamilton is the first top 100 recruit to commit to BC since Craig Smith in 2002. He is also bringing along his older brother, Jared, who transferred from Georgia Southern last semester and will be eligible to play in December.
The Skinny: After back-to-back last-place finishes in the ACC, the Eagles took a big step last season by finishing above .500 and reaching the NIT. The new goal is a return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade.
Expectations: Boston College is a longshot to make the NCAA Tournament and a 350-1 shot to win it. The Eagles were picked to finish 12th in the conference by the ACC media.
PREVIEW
FSU, BC both eye turnarounds in Sunday clash

With the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule in full swing, No. 11 Florida State visits Boston College on Sunday in a matchup between two teams battling for standing early on.

The Seminoles (13-4 overall, 1-3 in the ACC) are coming off a loss Monday at Pittsburgh, while the Eagles (9-7, 0-4) are still looking for their first conference win after opening the ACC slate with four straight losses.

The latest Boston College defeat came Wednesday against Louisville 80-70 and marked the fifth straight loss for the Eagles, and one of those losses came to lowly Hartford in overtime.

Needless to say, a win Sunday against Florida State would go a long way to turning the Eagles' season around.

"I'm totally disappointed in myself, I'm totally disappointed in my team the way we performed" Boston College coach Jim Christian said after the Eagles' Jan. 9 loss to Virginia. "I think it starts with me, and that spreads to them. They have to become a more committed group. We were a very committed group last year."

Scoring hasn't been a problem for the Eagles, who have four players averaging double figures. But winning has.

Guard Ky Bowman, one of the ACC's top scorers, leads Boston College at 19.9 points and 8.3 rebounds a game, followed by guard Wynston Tabbs (14.1 ppg), forward Nik Popovic (13.8 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and guard Jordan Chatman (12.8 ppg).

On Florida State's side, the Seminoles enter Sunday's game having lost two straight -- first to No. 1 Duke on a last-second shot last Saturday and then two days later at Pitt. The Seminoles badly need a victory to right the ship that started 12-1 before losing three of their next four games once the ACC schedule started.

And Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton is not happy about that.

"You don't ever want to accept that (kind of ACC start)," Hamilton said. "It was an emotional loss for us (against Duke), but that's part of what you have to prepare for in the ACC. Pitt lost Saturday too. They bounced back and we didn't."

The Seminoles are led by forward Mfiondu Kabengele at 11.8 points per game. Not far behind are guard Terance Mann (11.5 ppg and team-high 6.2 rebounds per game) and guard Trent Forrest (10.0 ppg and a team-high 3.5 assists per game).

After Sunday's game, Florida State hosts Clemson on Tuesday.

Boston College gets a bit of a breather before its next game, with five days off before playing at Wake Forest next Saturday.
