KEY GAME INFORMATION
MISSOURI: Kim Anderson is the new coach of the Tigers, and year one may be difficult for the team to get a lot of wins. PF Johnathan Williams III (5.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG and 1.6 BPG) started every game last season as a freshman, improving steadily throughout the season. With Williams as the top returning scorer, transfers will have to play a big role on this team, as SG Deuce Bello (Baylor) and PG Keith Shamburger (Hawaii) are super athletic and should be major assets on both ends of the court. Sophomore PG Wes Clark (4.1 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 2.1 APG) will be the guy running the show for the Tigers, as he is the only returning guard, but it's possible that Anderson will have both Clark and Shamburger on the court at the same time.
ARIZONA: The Wildcats were defeated in the Elite Eight last season, falling to Wisconsin by one point. While they lost two players to the NBA (Aaron Gordon and Nick Johnson), Arizona is once again a legitimate national title contender. The biggest reason for the optimism is freshman F Stanley Johnson. The 6-foot-7 lefty is as difficult of a matchup as there is in college basketball. He has the speed and athleticism to beat opponents off the bounce, but at 245 pounds he can take smaller players on the block. He has a chance to become the leading scorer on this team from day one. Arizona last season suffered a huge injury when SF Brandon Ashley (11.5 PPG, 5.8 RPG) was lost for the year. The team was undefeated when it lost to California, 60-58. Ashley was injured two minutes into that game, and took away one of Arizona's best scoring threats in the half-court game. With PF Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (9.1 PPG, 5.7 RPG) and C Kaleb Tarczewski (9.9 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 59% FG), the Wildcats have two guys that are going to make the Wildcats one of the best rebounding teams in the country. The leader of this offense will be senior PG T.J. McConnell (8.4 PPG, 5.3 APG, 3.6 RPG), who needs to improve his foul shooting (62% FT). If Arizona can improve in its half-court offense, the school could be playing in Indianapolis at the end of the season.

*Missouri-Arizona Preview* ==========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Missouri (2-1) at Arizona (3-0), 5:00 p.m. EDT

Arizona thinks its latest game provided the proper challenge and preparation for its trip to the Maui Invitational.

The second-ranked Wildcats open that tournament against a largely inexperienced Missouri squad Saturday.

Arizona (3-0) has earned its wins by an average of 19.3 points but trailed visiting UC Irvine with less than eight minutes to go Wednesday, then pulled away for a 71-54 victory. Leading scorer Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had 10 of his career-best 19 points during an 28-6 run in the second half.

"I know tonight we grew up a whole lot," point guard T.J. McConnell said, "and we have a lot of confidence going into Maui."

The Wildcats head to Hawaii giving up an average of 59.0 points and 39.2 percent shooting, defensive play that allowed them to overcome their 39.6 percent performance Wednesday in their third game in six days. Arizona shot a combined 55.7 percent in wins over Mount St. Mary's and Cal State Northridge.

"We can't play any harder or more together on defense," coach Sean Miller said. "As our offense grows and develops and it will continue to get better, we have to be dominant defensively."

Miller's team also had a much-improved showing at the free-throw line, making 29 of 34 after shooting 56.7 percent (34 for 60) in the first two games.

"It's all mental," Hollis-Jefferson said. "You've got to have that confidence that it's going to go in. It rubs off. Once one person starts making it, the other players on the team start making it and it gets contagious."

Missouri is coming off its best shooting performance from everywhere but the free-throw line. The Tigers (2-1) went 12 of 21 from 3-point range and shot 51.0 percent overall in a 78-64 home victory over Oral Roberts on Wednesday.

Leading scorer Montaque Gill-Caesar, averaging 16.3 points, had 19 and made four shots of his seven shots from beyond the arc. The freshman also went 5 of 6 from the line, but Missouri finished at 55.2 percent (16 of 29).

The Tigers shot a combined 38.9 percent from the field in their first two games.

After losing their top three leading scorers from last season, Missouri is playing with three underclassmen in the starting lineup and three more freshmen in the rotation for first-year coach Kim Anderson. The Tigers have one regular who has been with the program for more than two seasons, starting forward Ryan Rosburg.

One of their top incoming players, Jakeenan Gant, is out while his eligibility is being reviewed.

"(The Maui Invitational) going to be a great experience. It'll be good to see where our team is and what strides we have to make towards March," point guard Wes Clark said. "We're a young team and we're trying to find our chemistry and a feel for each other. So, we're just looking to see where we're at exactly."

The Wildcats and Tigers have split their two previous meetings with Arizona winning the most recent one 92-72 in the 1994 NCAA tournament regional final. Missouri earned a 76-73 win over the Wildcats in Honolulu in December 1984.

Arizona and Missouri play again Tuesday against Kansas State or Purdue.
